La Cumparsita: Tango with Pole

La Cumparsita: Tango with Pole is a 35-minute stage performance that blends tango and pole dance. The performance includes a prelude to the piece, where the story of La Cumparsita - the song- is traced alongside tango history, blended with a feminist outlook to how the song started as a march and ended as a wedding intro, traveling overseas. The performance also features live music by world-renowned Turkish guitar virtuoso Hüsrev İsfendiyaroğlu.

Tango with Pole was born out of a desire to challenge the unspoken rules of the tango world:
Who leads? Who follows? Who gets to take up space? Who waits to be chosen?

Inspired by the long-forgotten roots of tango—where men once danced with men to learn, to practice, to lead—we now dare to bring woman-to-woman tango to the center stage. Combined with pole dance, a form often misread as spectacle, we reclaim its original language: strength, agency, rhythm, and connection.

The project debuted with a pole-tango reinterpretation of La Cumparsita and has since become a platform for exploring queer, feminist, and somatic themes through movement.

This is an ongoing inquiry in body politics, intimacy, and cultural critique.

It is also, simply, a dance. Come and see it for yourself! ;)
